The Catropolitan Opera: The Centenary Celebration of the Grand Catropolitan Opera Company

Authors: Susan Herbert and Bill Meadowcane
Average review score:

Opera and Cats Perfect together
If you love oprea or cats, or both. You must have this book. IT is just too much FUN to read this. Test your knowledge of opera by just naming the opera without reading the text. It is not hard becasuse Ms. Herbert captures the essence of each opera. Give this as a gift to your opera/cat loving friend, you will be a HERO. Mr. Meadowcane's text is witty, however, "Egenue Onegin" is not a tenor.

Celia's Grand Passion (Regency Romance)
Published in Paperback by Fawcett Books (April, 1998)
Authors: Lynn Kerstan and Kerstan Lynn
Average review score:

Wonderful!!!!!!
I expected a pleasant tale but was not ready for the maelstrom of emotions this book contained. Every character was so well introduced and fleshed out! You were allowed to form opinions and then have them dashed as you found out each person's background.

My slight relating of the story will not do it justice -- Lady Celia Greer, widowed and wealthy has arrived in London to take in the season. On her first day, she sees a man (Lord Kendal) who has dominated her dreams - they have never formally met. She had seen Lord Kendal (James) leaving a church many years before on his wedding day, beautiful beloved bride on his arm. Chance has thrown them together again. He is now a widower, and being an experienced diplomat, he possesses the ability to both charm, yet distance himself from everyone. Thinking to have a quick, meaningless affair with the beautiful Celia - James finds himself faced with much more than his icy heart can deal with. Their unorthodox first meeting and subsequent encounters and conversations are amongst the best I have ever read. Will Lord Kendal be Celia's "Grand Passion?"

The romance will take you from London to the Lake District where you become better acquainted with Lord Kendal's son Charley and James's brother Kit. Along the way you will learn of both Celia's disappointing marriage and Lord Kendall's disastrous union also. Some diplomatic adventures are introduced as you meet a Russian general and famous poet. You will also be reacquainted with deep love, for family, for friends and for life itself. I was truly moved.

This is Regency Romance at its very best. Do not miss reading this book.

Boy, is this good. A terrific Regency by a great author.
I loved this book-- the impulsive, idealistic heroine, the dashing hero, and the sweetest kid... I just felt like I knew the characters and suffered with them. And I loved the connection to the great romantic poets of the time. She's a great author-- I've read her earlier books-- and I think she's really reaching her pinnacle here.

Sparkling dialogue and wonderful characters
Topnotch Kerstan, Celia is a survivor with style who gets her man with wit and humor and tenacity. The supporting cast for a regency is broad but well delineated. Loved this book it is a keeper.

Chancy and the Grand Rascal

Authors: Sid Fleischman and Eric Von Schmidt

Great!
Chancy and the Grand Rascal was a book that my mom enjoyed reading and one that I enjoy too! The story kind of takes you in with it! I loved it!!

Fleischman delivers another one . . .
In the same light as the delightful Mr Mysterious & Co, this time the author of The Whipping Boy takes us to Tom Sawyer country for a delightful look at swindlers, liars, and cheats, and the good people who rise above it all.

Wow.
This is one the best books I've ever read. It sucks you in so quickly that it's unbelievelable. Great storyline, great dialouge, and great characters are the things that make this book up. Thanks to the mastermind Sid Fleischman.....

Classic Grand Prix Cars - The Front-Engined Formula One Era 1906-1960
Published in Hardcover by Sutton Publishing (June, 2000)
Author: Karl Ludvigsen
Average review score:

A Nice Overview
This book covers the period very well, giving a detailed overview of each "sub-era" nicely, without reverting into a who-finished-where-for-each-race format. It includes articles from the period from vintage magazines, photos (including some nice color photos from the early '50s) and illustrations on every page, detailed descriptions of significant technological advances, as well as the personalities of the day. It's a nice intro for those unfamiliar with the period, and a nice review for those who are. My favorite part: the chapter covering the "Silver Arrows" from the '30s, Mercedes and Auto Union. Although it's titled "The Front Engined Era," Ludvigsen also covers the early rear engined cars as well, such as Cisitalia's Porsche-designed Type 360, the Alfa Romeo Tipo 512, and, of course, the Cooper-Climax.

This one's a keeper
I was born in 1951, and didn't really pay serious attention to F1 until Mario made a serious run at the title. This book has gone a long way toward filling a major hole in my understanding of Grand Prix racing. It's a superb book. The writing and the photos are first rate. I wouldn't have imagined that I would find the early cars as interesting as Ludvigsen made them. I had no idea that GP cars had as much power as they did, as early as they did. Coupled with the so-called tires of the time, and the agricultural "suspensions", Ludvigsen has given me an inkling of the courage and skill of the drivers who drove some of those beasts. Now I'm reading Classic Racing Engines, but that will be another review...

An excellent history of the Formula 1 era from 1906-60
Classic Grand Prix Cars provides an excellent history of the Formula 1 era from 1906-60, with liberal doses of vintage black and white photos accompanying information on the sports cars and engineers which powered them. Prior fans of auto racing history in general and Formula 1 in particular will find Classic Grand Prix Cars a keepsake history packed with lively descriptions and technical insights on the cars. Very highly recommended for all Grand Prix racing fans!

The Dam Busters (Pan Grand Strategy Series)
Published in Paperback by Pan Macmillan (22 January, 1999)
Author: Paul Brickhill
Average review score:

True-life high adventure. TARGET: From Rhur dams to Hitler!
I first read this story as a freshman in high school and couldn't put it down! I have re-read the book several times since then. The adventures of 617 Squadron have all of the elements of an Indiana Jones movie; from the most inovative, fantastic, and bizarre ideas (five-ton bouncing bombs to ten-ton, earthquake producing "Tall Boy" bombs) to shear, white-knuckle, edge-of-your-seat danger (low-level night flying over Nazi Germany). Check out Paul Brickhill's "The Great Escape" and "Reach for the Sky." You won't be disapointed

A first-class true-life epic of WWII British Aviation
I have read, and re-read this book many times over the last several years. Having studied 617 Squadron operations in general, and meeting some of the few survivors, I can't get enough of the inside story on this wonderful special-ops squadron. Also please read Enemy Coast Ahead, by Guy Gibson, who was the original Dambuster's leader. I find many of the ops after the dams raid to be even more interesting and harrowing !! This is a great read for general interest and true buffs alike.

Lancasters soar through the very jaws of death!
An absolute classic, "The Dam Busters" follows the adventures of 617 squadron. From its inception specifically for the attack on the Moehne and Eder dams to the destruction of the German battleship "Tirpitz" 617 Squadron showed the British just as capable at pinpoint targeting as their American cousins. Everytime I pick-up a text on the "heavies" I am reminded of the heroism and sacrifice of the amazing individuals who were carried aloft by them. Frommer's Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks
Published in Paperback by Frommer (February, 2002)
Author: Eric Peterson
Average review score:

better than his last one
this book is a lot better than Petersen's previous efforts. Well written, well organized, thoroughly detailed, and chock full of insightful insights. Bravo, Mr. Peterson!

Right to the detail
Can you imagine writing 243 pages on just 2 National Parks? That's why I say it's right to the detail!

Like all Frommer's books, the author starts with his recommendations - best vacations, best hotels, best eateries, best sights etc etc - with regards to the region in question (in this case YST & GRT). And it's really not about pure reporting the facts, but personal opinions that encourage rather than dictate your own opinion-forming process.

Other useful information includes month-by-month temperature information, road closures, where to get money, ATM machines etc, and, my favorite of all, When-to-go guide. There's even a section that talks about towns and cities bordering Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks, though they are not part of the region proper!

As we go deeper, the book will further the divide the regions into smaller sub-regions, such as Old Faithful Area, Norris Jct Area and Jackson Hole. You want to know which town really suits you and will make your vacation a memorable one. There's even a map showing which town is nearest to which attractions. For example if you love the Old Faithful, you won't want to fly into Jackson Hole; or if you wanna river raft in the Snake River, Cody is not the right place to reside during your stay!

By the look of how much I know as mentioned above, you know how good the book is! ;O)

Attention To Detail
As my wife and I were planning our vacation to Yellowstone, we stumbled upon this wonderful resource. Mr. Peterson has done an excellent job presenting accurate and insightfull information that made our preproduction a true breeze! The format of this book was extremely user friendly and it allowed us easy access as we navigated through all of the endless routes and hotels surrounding the park. Bravo! This guide was instrumental in helping us to plan a very wonderful and memorable trip!

The Grand Catharsis
Published in Paperback by Lucky Star Press (01 August, 1998)
Author: Ken Kalb
Average review score:

Astounding!
This book is a joy to read. It is hilarious. Yet this levity is only to balance the gravity of the subject matter. The planet is in a "grand catharsis," or great cleansing. Mr. Kalb takes us on a journey back and forth through time then into the future. Written in 1995, the predictive work of this book is spot on. I've heard him called "the Nostradamus of our time," but I think this nomiker is incorrect. Kalb is not a prophet of doom and gloom, but one of wisdom and understanding. The entire planet is having a "near death experience," similar to the one the author had in Mexico. There is a chapter called "The Stars of Saddam," written prior to the first Gulf War which actually nailed the very day that it would start. A World Class astrologer, the author is a different breed. He is sane and he is coool! He's even a lifetime surfer. This book is a classic. Read it, laugh, think, get inspired, enjoy.

The Grand Catharsis is truly Grand
This is So much more than a great astrology book. It is all of human history from a unified perspective. The predictive accuracy is near perfect. Thought provoking, hard hitting, powerful material. Hilarious at times, yet deeply meaningful. Truly a magical blend and a delightful reading experience.

Vision and Inspiration
With humor and vision, The Grand Catharsis tells the unwritten history of consciousness on planet Earth. Hard hitting core issues are unveiled provoking a deep internal unleashing of cellular memory of who we are and where we are going. From mysticism to a magical mystery tour into our future, you will be thrilled by the E ticket ride.

Grand Entrances
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (03 August, 2000)
Authors: Terry Hamburg and Judy Erickson
Average review score:

Provides a closeup color portrait
Terry Hamburg'sGrand Entrances is an informative and compelling survey of attractive, artistic retail storefronts in San Francisco provides a closeup color portrait of some of the city's most colorful creations. Over eight color illustrations and photos capture everything from signage to murals and exceptional presentations. Art and architecture schools with sections on commercial art will find this a 'must'.

A great gift book!
This book has heart and soul. The imagination and humor these storeowners and artists display is amazing! I especially appreciated the captions which tell the story of each storefront. The details are unexpected and funny. I also liked the Introduction which gives a great history of how San Francisco came to have so many "grand entrances." I know which book I will be giving to friends and family this holiday season!

a grand book!
Grand Entrances opens the door to the whimsy that is in the heart of San Francisco. The superb photographs capture the spirit of the artists, the shopkeepers who proudly display the creations, and the climate of the people who live in the area. This book rather reminded me of the children's book about the man who painted his house purple in a neighborhood where all the houses looked alike. However, in this case, everyone painted his or her storefront with wild imagination. Indeed, looking at the photos and reading the background about this era, I wondered if people at that time appreciated the beauty and creativity of the times. Personally, I savored the diversity of San Francisco. San Francisco encompasses all kinds of spirits, and this book captures that unique strength. Grand Entrances was fun!

Grand obese
Published in Unknown Binding by St. Martin's Press ()
Author: Cesar J. Rotondi
Average review score:

Grand Obese
This is an amazingly funny book! THE BEST in comedy! It'll keep you rolling and laughing hours AFTER you put it down! I bought it 12 years ago for a quarter and after reading it, went back to the bookstore and bought the last 2 they had! It is a book you MUST pass around to anyone and EVERYONE you know! It is THAT funny! I do believe that this novel would make a #1 movie!
PLease read it!

Impossible to forget
I read Cesar J. Rotondi's "Grand Obese" over ten years ago, and like Toole's "Confederacy of Dunces," Fante's "The Road to Los Angeles," Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye," and various Thomas Berger novels, I cannot shake the book from my head. It had deep impact in my conciousness. It is highly reccomended.

A delicious black comedy about a family of compulsive eaters
Cesar Rotondi has written the best book ever about compulsive eating. All of the excuses people give for eating "just one more" are included, as Sylvie and her enormous children expand beyond the confines of their Chicago townhouse. The ending is macabre, but entirely consistent with the rest of the story. Buy this book and pass it around. It should never have been allowed to go out of print.

The Hidden Canyon: A River Journey
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (April, 1999)
Authors: John Blaustein, Edward Abbey, and Martin Litton
Average review score:

AWE INSPIRING!!
Having rafted the Colorado myself 2 years ago, this was a perfect souvenir-reminder of my trip. The photos in particular are exquisite - some I have no idea how he managed to capture without ending up in the river himself. I lost my Pentax to the very first rapid! This book definitely gives a sense of what the Canyon, the river, and the rapids are like. Makes me want to go back!

Breathtaking
I have traveled through the Grand Canyon many times, both on the river and on the trails. John Blaustein has not only been able to capture the beauty of the canyon but also the soul of the river it contains. Abbey's journal is a fine compliment to the pulchritude of the pictures.

excellent
Any fan of unique photography and wonderful words should buy this reissue. Mr. Blaustein is a gifted photographer and abbey is equally adept in capturing the magic of this river trip. The book is a reminder of what could be lost, if we fail to preserve the glorious heritage of our national parks.
